Don’t Text and Drive. 1 second changed my life.
Don’t Text and Drive
“BAMMM.”
That was the sound we heard.
Then everything went silent.
The car spun around, and thanks to my quick reaction, I managed to stop it before even more damage was done.
The driver behind us was checking his phone while driving 80 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. He didn’t see my indicator. He didn’t see my brake lights. I was almost standing still, preparing to turn, when he crashed into our car.
Now I am recovering from a concussion and whiplash.
My life is on hold.
Simple things most people take for granted have become daily challenges. Pain and symptoms often dictate my days, and sometimes even my hours. Thankfully, there are good days too.
For those who don’t know: this is not something that disappears after a week.
The effects of trauma to the brain and spine can last for months or even years. Memory problems, severe headaches, dizziness, fatigue, mood changes, loss of strength, movement difficulties, and sensitivity to light and sound are only part of the story.
Time will tell how much I recover and what that recovery will look like.
So I ask you this:
The next time you reach for your phone while driving, remember that one second of distraction can change someone’s life forever.
Some damage cannot be repaired.
Sometimes pain and trauma becomes the legacy you leave behind.
And remember:
It could happen to you.
It could happen to someone you love.
DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE.
