NAH (Acquired Brain Injury) – It just happens.

NAH (Acquired Brain Injury)
This is a red thread throughout my life, with major impact on my being.

The causes are usually well known words that are easy to mention, until you or someone very close to you actually has to deal with it.

Then those words suddenly get meaning and make you realize how huge the impact is, not only for the person going through it, but also for the bystanders around them.

Now that I am once again in a recovery process, and things are not going the way they should, I notice how often people react with misunderstanding because of lack of knowledge.

For me the future feels uncertain, because I do not know how I will come out of this.

It is quite a scary process, reshaping yourself with the possibilities that are there, the well known “rowing with the paddles you have.”

I have to explore my limits and that is a mental challenge.

Because when I cross my limit, I go 10 steps backwards and spend hours to days recovering.
If I do nothing, things go reasonably well, but then I have no clue what I actually can do or if there is any progress.

Every day is figuring out what I can handle and realizing every step forward still counts as one.

NAH (Acquired Brain Injury) has many different causes and many different consequences, yet experiencing it and rehabilitating from it is recognizable in many ways for others who have gone through it.

In my case, this time the cause is traumatic brain injury, meaning caused by something outside the body.

The first days I could do nothing.

Extreme fatigue, nausea, headaches, dizziness, no appetite, sensitivity to light and sound, no focus, trouble finding words and mixing languages, memory loss, difficulty waking up properly, disturbed motor skills, loss of strength, problems with my vision, rollercoaster feelings when bending or turning, instability while walking, unable to drive, being slow in actions and execution, slower than the brain command itself.

Now 4 weeks later everything is unfortunately still present. Thankfully a little less severe, but I am still dependent on others and that has never been my strongest point.

For me overstimulation is now the biggest disturbance in being able to live like before.

Music, Mahjong, shopping, drinks, pub quizzes, get togethers, theatre, driving, cooking and baking, dining out, hosting my erotic parties, working… everything is on hold, or if I do something, I have a heavy recovery time afterwards.

Stimuli like sound, light, air, smell and movement are normally filtered by the brain so you are able to handle daily life and your surroundings. With NAH this filtering process is disturbed, leading to overload.

This can show itself in everything I just mentioned.

Know that overstimulation is not exaggeration or acting up, but a direct consequence of brain damage.

It is a serious and disabling problem that has major impact on the daily life of people with NAH and the people around them.

Become aware of how you contribute to someone else’s overstimulation. Insight often creates different ways of interacting.

Be kind to the people around you. Often you do not know what someone else is dealing with, while you might be exactly the difference they need.

NAH (Niet Aangeboren Hersenletsel)
