Cold hands are not the problem!
I am quick to label things as “just the way I am”.
But the body doesn’t do just.
It responds. It adapts. It protects.
Even when I don’t understand what it’s protecting me from.
There are things I’ve learned to accept about myself without ever questioning them. I just have cold hands. My feet are always freezing. That’s just how my body is. It sounded harmless. Almost like a personality trait. But what if it isn’t?
During a seminar, a psychotherapist said something that made the entire room go quiet.
Not because it was complicated, but because it felt uncomfortably true.
Cold hands and feet are not about poor circulation.
They’re about not feeling safe.
And suddenly, something shifted in me. Because if that’s true, then it means my body has a reason for everything. It’s responding. Always.
My body is not broken, it’s protecting me.
When I experience stress, especially the kind that lingers, it doesn’t just stay in my thoughts.
It moves into my system. My body quietly switches into survival mode.
Not loudly, not dramatically. But steadily, in the background.
Blood flow changes.
Energy gets redirected.
Priorities shift.
My body starts choosing what matters most in that moment: my heart and my brain.
And it lets go of what it thinks it can afford to lose. Warmth in my hands, my feet, the outer edges of me.
Not because something is wrong with me. But because something doesn’t feel safe.
It’s an ancient response. The same mechanism that prepares an animal for danger. Except for me, the danger is rarely visible.
When the alarm never turns off.
I’ve always said my feet are cold, even in summer. The answer I found wasn’t about socks or circulation..
It was simple: My body is still in alarm mode. That’s the part I don’t always see. Because I can be sitting still, living my life, doing everything right and still have a nervous system that hasn’t learned how to relax. Not fully. Not deeply.
And when that happens, my body doesn’t return to baseline. It stays slightly on edge. Slightly guarded. All the time.
It shows up in more than just temperature.
For me, cold hands are just the surface. Underneath, the same pattern shows up as brain fog, difficulty focusing, constant fatigue and feeling off without knowing why.
Not because I’m not capable.
Not because something is wrong with my mind. But because my system is using energy to stay alert instead of restoring.
My body isn’t failing me. It’s trying to keep me safe.
So the question changes.
It’s no longer: why am I always cold?
It becomes something quieter. More honest.
Where in my life do I feel safe enough to relax?
And that question isn’t meant to judge myself. It’s meant to guide me. Because the moment my body starts to feel safe again, truly safe, it won’t have to hold on so tightly anymore.
And sometimes, that’s where warmth begins.
